Jimmy Carter and Religion

If you haven't read Jimmy Carter's essay on why he's leaving the Southern Baptist Convention yet, you should. The former President wrote this for an Australian publication, and I found it online. In this essay, he makes a heartfelt statement about the fundamentalists' treatment of women and girls.

While some may argue that the self-proclaimed humanitarian should have made this break years ago, this essay resonates. It's often hard to imagine that large segments of our culture still hold the view that women should be subservient to their husbands. It's 2009, and we're still fighting this battle.
